Step One – Advise your current accountant of your decision to leave
Write a letter to your current accountant advising that you will be switching to another firm and for them to provide any information requested to the new accountants. You should confirm if you expect work to be finalised.
Step Two – Register with a new accountant
Your new accountant (Croft Accountancy Services Limited) will send a form for you to complete your registration with them which will include your personal, as well as company information. According to UK law, your new accountant will carry out anti-money laundering checks on you, so you will have to provide a scan of your passport or driving license as well as a recent utility bill.
Step Three – Professional Clearance
Your new accountant (Croft Accountancy Services) will write to your previous accountant requesting professional clearance. This asks if there are any professional reasons as to why they should not accept the appointment. This letter also requests documents from the previous accountant which includes copies of year-end accounts, corporation tax returns, personal tax returns plus any other information required.
It could take a couple of weeks for all your accounting information to be transferred to your new accountant.
Step Four – Letter of Engagement
If the new accountant (Croft Accountancy Services) is registered with a professional body, they are obliged to send through a ‘Letter of Engagement’. Make sure to read through it carefully as it sets out the expectations and requirements between you and the new accountant.
Step Five – Agent Authorisation
Your new accountant (Croft Accountancy Services Limited) will apply for agent authorisation. This gives your new accountant authority to deal with HMRC on your behalf for both personal and company tax matters.
